A high-ranking Russian army officer has been declared dead following an detonation in Moscow, according to an investigative body.

The event occurred on Monday morning when an IED planted beneath a vehicle exploded, resulting in the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov held the position of the head of the armed forces' unit responsible for operational readiness.

Investigators stated that one line of inquiry suggests the possible involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. So far, Ukraine has offered no public response.

Site of the Blast

Officials have been sent to the scene, which is understood to be in a southerly district of the metropolis.

Accounts indicate the explosion occurred in a vehicle lot near a residential building.

Series of Assaults

Since the start of the extensive conflict in Ukraine, a number of Russian military officials have been targeted within Moscow.

This latest event echoes other notable incidents, including:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a car bomb attack in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov was killed in late 2024 when a device placed on a scooter was detonated remotely.

While a Ukrainian source in the past attributed Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such assertions are not publicly admitted as a matter of policy.

Hostilities has been marked by clandestine operations moving into the streets of the Russian capital.

The examination into General Sarvarov's death remains active.
