In a major move for their overhauling roster, the American League club have officially added infielder Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a two-year contract with the high-profile player.
The contract includes a substantial signing bonus, issued within 30 days, in addition to annual pay of $16M for the upcoming season and $17M for the following year.
Additionally, Murakami's final-year pay can increase based on performance achievements in 2026:
His deal provides that he cannot be sent to the minor leagues without his permission and allows him to become a free agent at the termination of the contract. Further benefits include a dedicated interpreter and airfare between Japan and the U.S..
As part of the signing, Chicago is obligated to provide a compensation payment of over $6.5 million to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's Central League. The Japanese club would also receive a 15% cut of 15% triggered incentive payments.
Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth-ever player from Japan to represent the South Siders, in the footsteps of pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu once managed Murakami during their time in Japan.
Murakami, a left-side batter who turns 26 in February, bolsters a young group of offensive players in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are finished with a 60-102 season, placing last in the American League Central but representing a 19-game improvement from the prior campaign.
A two-time Most Valuable Player honors in '21 and '22, Murakami made history with a historic 2022 season where he hit 56 homers, surpassing the single-season record for a player in Japan previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the most youthful hitter ever to win Japan's prestigious batting Triple Crown.
His 2023 season was curtailed to a partial schedule due to an muscle issue. Despite fanning often, he batted .273 with 22 home runs and 47 driven in.
Over his career tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has compiled a .270 career batting average with 246 HRs, 647 RBI, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in 892 games. Initially playing mostly at first, he has spent most of his time to third.
Murakami's heroics were on full display during the last World Baseball Classic. In the semi-final against Mexico, he drove in a game-ending two-base hit that drove in teammates for a thrilling 6-5 win. The following day in the title match against the Team USA, he slugged a tying homer in the second inning, helping Japan's 3-2 title triumph.
The new White Sox addition is scheduled to be formally introduced at a introductory event on the coming Monday.
