The offspring of ex- South African Head of State Jacob Zuma has denied all charges to terrorism-related charges at the beginning of her trial in the harbor city of Durban.

The defendant, 43, is being prosecuted over comments she posted on social media in the past during deadly demonstrations in South Africa that came after the apprehension of her dad.

A week of chaos in various areas of the country in the summer of 2021, including looting and intentional burning, resulted in at least 300 individuals deceased and resulted in damage worth an estimated $2.8bn (£2.2 billion).

The defendant has been accused of inciting this turmoil and faces allegations of incitement to commit terror-related activities and civil unrest.

History of the Proceedings

The unrest were focused in the provinces of Gauteng and KZN and were triggered by the ex-leader's arrest for defying a judicial ruling to appear as a witness at an inquiry into allegations of corruption while he was holding office.

She has consistently rejected the accusations against her, with her attorney in the past calling the government's legal argument as weak.

She has also repeatedly said the allegations against her were an bid to settle political disputes with her dad after he established his own political organization and ran against the African National Congress.

Backing and Legal Defense

This was echoed by the Zuma foundation, which stated the legal matter was an "abuse of power" and a "organized effort" of "political and family-related harassment" against the previous head of state and his family.

A small number of supporters from her political organization, uMkhonto weSizwe, gathered outside the provincial high court, while her dad and other party leaders were present at the proceedings inside.

Her legal team has stated that the evidence presented by government lawyers is insufficient and does not have substantial proof for a criminal finding.

Key Points of the Trial

  • Online statements from the past form the core of the state's argument
  • Deadly demonstrations in 2021 resulted in substantial fatalities and monetary damage
  • The individual on trial faces multiple charges of encouragement to public disorder
  • Court proceedings are projected to proceed for several court sessions

The court case continues as all parties present their arguments before the judge in what is anticipated to be a carefully observed court case with significant politically charged implications for South Africa.
