Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs posted earlier today that show the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials say fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he succumbed to his wounds. An investigation is under way.

Our starting point to check the location of where the pictures were from relied on social media reports saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.

Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building captured in the video.

Locating other structures, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the footage were taken.

We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
