The acclaimed co-director responsible for a legendary franchise is crafting a comeback with a fresh title. His new project, named Coven of the Chicken Foot, represents the debut for his development house, Wildflower Interactive, a project that will build on his previous work prioritizing characters that learn and adapt.
Unveiled during the 2025 Game Awards, Coven of the Chicken Foot is pitched as a character-puzzle-platformer. Players control Gertie, a character who challenges conventional action-game archetypes. The core idea originated in an interest in re-examining the typical hero’s journey.
"What if you lacked the sword or shield? What if your character was not built for battle? What if you're an elderly woman?" asked the director. "This felt really fascinating to think about what makes a hero. Heroism involves fighting your way through obstacles, but it’s also about selflessness and unwavering will."
Although this project looks different visually, its core innovation builds directly upon the character dynamics pioneered in The Last of Us. The game's conception sprang from one pivotal question: "What if I could make Ellie truly living and learning to the player?"
The companion creature in the game is far from a scripted follower. It is essentially a curious child that interacts in three key stages. First, it exhibits curiosity, resulting in silly antics. Then, it enters a playful state. Finally, it observes and assimilates to learn how things work.
Such advanced AI seeks to generate a unique story for each player. The director emphasizes that this project functions as a slower-paced, exploration-driven experience as opposed to a linear, combat-centric story.
"Whenever I attempted more hardcore story beats for this project, the excitement fell apart," he stated. "The true vitality in this partnership lies in the fact that you as a player are going to have unique moments and stories unlike anyone else's."
This focus on organic narrative born from interaction, the new title marks simultaneously a refinement and a significant shift from the director’s well-known franchises. This adventure remains targeting PC platforms.
