Republicans in California filed a federal lawsuit this Wednesday, challenging a significant redistricting measure that could flip as many as five congressional seats to the benefit of the Democratic party.
The measure, Proposition 50, received approval by the electorate Tuesday night, marking a clear win for Democrats. The plan temporarily gives the authority to delineate electoral boundaries to the California legislature, enabling it to approve district maps that will help the Democratic party gain five seats in the House of Representatives.
The plan is a targeted countermeasure to gerrymandering in the state of Texas, where Republicans, at the US president’s behest, have carved out several new districts favoring Republicans.
