Massive Upheaval Ahead: UK's Most Severe Climate Crisis Possibilities Laid Bare by Researchers

The most severe projected effects of the climate crisis for the UK have been mapped by experts, ranging from a blistering 4C increase in mean temperatures to a 2-metre increase in ocean levels. Another scenario envisions a decline of 6C in temperatures following the failure of critical Atlantic Ocean currents, which would severely impact farming and energy needs.

Plausible Events, Not Forecasts

These effects, certain ones are connected to critical climate thresholds, are seen as improbable but credible. The team explained that these models addressed a shortfall in forecasting that had rendered the UK not ready for extreme outcomes.

"The worst-case scenarios we have detailed are not forecasts, but they are plausible," said the lead researcher who oversaw the study. "Britain has been formulating policy in the absence of the methods to assess worst-case scenarios. We've now provided planners what they need to plan for future conditions they wish to avoid, but can’t afford to ignore."

A Spectrum of Severe Conditions Scenarios

A further series of worst-case scenarios maps the potential extent of harsh climate between now and the year 2100. These show that thermometer readings could rocket in particular seasons by up to 6C above the norm, while rainfall could be 300% of normal levels.

The likelihood of the extreme scenarios occurring cannot be precisely determined due to unknown factors about what action will be taken to combat global warming and how the Earth's systems will respond. This analysis was described as similar to defence planning or scenario planning for the banking sector.

Key Scenario Details

  • 4C Temperature Rise: Worldwide averages exceeding 4C by 2100 could occur if emissions cuts collapses or if powerful amplifying effects like the tropical forests dying release its vast reserves of carbon. This would cause severe and lengthy heat domes and droughts affecting the UK in summer.
  • Ocean Circulation Failure: A key circulation system, the AMOC, is slowing down and showing signs of collapse due to ocean warming. A collapse commencing by 2030 would lead to a six-degree temperature drop in the UK. "Agriculture would face immense difficulties and water resources would be completely altered," noted Arnell.
  • Accelerated Coastal Flooding: A surge of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could take place if polar ice in the Arctic and Antarctic collapse rapidly, flooding seaside communities. Unlike the other scenarios, this risk is already understood by planners.
  • Clean Air Warming: Global averages could also be increased by about 0.75C if airborne particulates is drastically reduced. This counterintuitive effect occurs because aerosol particles from industrial activity block sunlight from warming the ground.

Preparing for the Extreme

The severe models could be utilized in planning the building of major projects, including expanded cities, nuclear power stations and water management networks. Knowledge about these climate risks could also speed the transition to reduce fossil fuel emissions.

The analysis developed the severe projections using a mix of real-world events, digital projections and established principles. The scenarios omit international cascading effects including the devastation of food supplies and geopolitical instability.

The project was requested as part of a official risk assessment framework. Earlier reports have stated that too little consideration was being paid to low‐likelihood but high‐impact risks.

An independent advisory body has said that the UK needs to "prepare for two degrees of warming" and evaluate the dangers for four degrees. Earlier government strategies have been labeled being "very weak" by environmental groups.

An official statement commented: "The climate emergency is at the heart of this government’s agenda, both preparing for impacts and establishing itself as a clean energy superpower. It is vital that the UK is ready for the effects."
