My feeling was I got a touch - Alex Carey on overturned decision.

Australian gloveman Alex Carey admitted he felt he had feathered the ball when he was given not out on DRS during day one of the third Ashes Test against England.

Following his reprieve on 72, Carey proceeded to score a fine 106 to help the hosts reach 326-8 at the close in Adelaide.

The Key Moment

Australia were 245 for 6 when Carey attempted a cut shot to seamer Josh Tongue.

The England team lodged a strong appeal, believing they had heard an edge, but umpire Ahsan Raza remained unconvinced.

After skipper Ben Stokes referred the on-field call, the footage reviewed by TV umpire Chris Gaffaney displayed a spike although this registered prior to the ball had passed the bat.

Gaffaney also said he was of the opinion there was a clearance between bat and ball.

As a result, Carey was given not out.

"There was a sound, I thought I'd nicked it," stated Carey.

"Had I been given out, I likely would have reviewed, but without much conviction. It was a nice sound as it passed the bat."

Ongoing Scrutiny

Questions have been raised about 'the sound wave technology' during the Ashes contest after a number of inconclusive moments.

Bowling coach David Saker indicated the touring side may escalate this latest incident to a higher level with match referee Jeff Crowe.

"We haven't acted yet, but following today's events, that could change," Saker said.

"We've had doubts about it throughout. The focus should be on cricket, not technology failures. That's where we are."

Emotional Century

His hundred was his first in Ashes cricket.

It was also an poignant moment for Carey, whose father died in recent months. Carey's wife was in tears in the crowd as the batter celebrated by looking to the skies.

"Scoring a century at home with family watching was incredible," said Carey.

"The reason for my look upwards is clear. I'm trying not to tear up. It was truly wonderful."

Not New to Furore

Carey is not new to Ashes controversy.

He was the keeper who famously dismissed Jonny Bairstow at Lord's Cricket Ground in the 2023 series, leading to a febrile final day.

Speaking about his survival he added: "Snicko obviously didn't line up. It is just the way cricket goes - sometimes you have a bit of luck."

"Maybe it went my way."
