In a defiant signal to the United States, Leader Vladimir Putin has told PM Narendra Modi that Russia is prepared to maintain “uninterrupted” deliveries of crude oil to India. The announcement came when Putin and Modi met in the Indian capital and asserted their bilateral ties were “resistant to foreign coercion.”
Putin's comments, made on Friday, was widely seen to be a pointed rebuke at western countries, that have tried to compel New Delhi into curtailing its close links with Moscow. The context follows earlier Washington's moves, notably additional trade penalties targeting New Delhi because of its acquisition of Russian oil.
“Our nation is a trustworthy supplier of oil and gas and all necessary for the advancement of India’s industry,” the Russian president stated. “Russia is prepared to continue securing the consistent supply of resources for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”
Prime Minister Modi, though he did not referencing crude directly, echoed the theme by saying that “energy security has been a key and vital cornerstone of the India-Russia partnership.”
Before the talks, in a television interview, Putin had criticized US interference over India's dealings with Russia. He argued, “Should America has the right to buy our atomic materials, why shouldn’t India have the equivalent access?”
Putin's arrival marked his first journey to India after the start of the situation in Ukraine, and both sides made a visible attempt to display that the bond between the heads of state persisted strongly.
In a rare step, Prime Minister Modi met Putin as he disembarked. Both leaders exchanged a hearty embrace as close allies before enjoying a closed-door supper on Thursday evening.
Modi later described India's relationship with Russia as “a beacon” and said it was “based on mutual respect and strong faith.”
The meeting resulted in multiple key agreements across military and trade relations. One significant result was the signing of an strategic roadmap extending until 2030, which targets to boost mutual trade to $100bn annually by the end of the decade.
Furthermore pledged to restructure their strategic cooperation. Although Russia continues to be India's largest source of defence equipment, its share has reduced lately as India has sought widen its sources.
The official release highlighted cooperation in the joint production of advanced defence platforms, even if specific reference of systems like the fifth-generation aircraft were not made.
Ultimately, both nations affirmed that in the “ongoing challenging, difficult, and uncertain international environment, the Indo-Russian partnership remain durable to foreign influence.”
