Rybakina Upsets Aryna Sabalenka to Win Historic £4 Million Payout

Elena Rybakina claimed the biggest reward in women's tennis all time by overcoming world number one Sabalenka in straight sets at the championship.

The 26-year-old produced a impressive display to overcome four-times Grand Slam winner her opponent 6-3 7-6 (7-0) in the host country.

Since each competitor came through the tournament undefeated, the purse on the table was a historic £3.98 million – the biggest prize offering in women's tennis the sport's history.

The reward tops the £3.74m the Belarusian earned for claiming September's US Open, which was the most lucrative major tournament in the current year.

Rybakina saved two break points before winning all four points in the sixth game of the set to take the break and served out to seal the first set.

As the second set progressed, Sabalenka defended another two break points at four-all to swing the momentum in her favor.

But, having worked so hard to disrupt Rybakina's rhythm, Sabalenka failed to capitalize by wasting two set points in the next game to level the second set at five-all.

Her inability to force a decider affected her tiebreak play, with Rybakina winning all seven points to claim the championship.

This win, her sixth triumph over her rival, means Rybakina will rise one place in the WTA rankings to fifth in the world rankings.

An emotional Sabalenka was seen crying as she met with her team shortly after the match.

"That was not the finest display from me today but Rybakina you were definitely the superior competitor," Sabalenka told the crowd.

"You really smashed me out of the court. I'm pleased to see you at your peak. Enjoy this stunning trophy."
