When she finds Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry strangely fears. By leaving the lens cap on a viewing device taken from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the danger lies not within the cave. By aligning her view to the cut-out, she and Max tumble into a abandoned tunnel.

There, they witness a Henry as a boy come across an man who is hurt and scared. When Henry tries to help, the man panics and shoots, wounding the boy in the hand.
