During the bulk of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive inside a mental fortress constructed from the memories of Henry Creel. The search for an escape route in the pivotal sixth episode forces them to experience a life-altering moment from Henry's childhoodâan event that potentially carries the means to overcome him once and for all.
Editor's Note: This article reveals crucial plot points for *Stranger Things* season 5, volume 2.
When she finds Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry strangely fears. By leaving the lens cap on a viewing device taken from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the danger lies not within the cave. By aligning her view to the cut-out, she and Max tumble into a abandoned tunnel.
There, they witness a Henry as a boy come across an man who is hurt and scared. When Henry tries to help, the man panics and shoots, wounding the boy in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly questions through tears. The answer is affirmative, but the trauma went deeper than a simple act of survival.
Similar to other plot points in volume 2, the significance of the events in the tunnel was first explored the live show Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
*The First Shadow* opens with the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a warship into a realm later called the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who came back in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.
This man's son, a young Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this phenomenon in Nevada. One of his scientists took experimental components to sell to the Soviets, who were keen to start their parallel research. This spy in the cavern is that employee.
Based on what is understood of his research, the container most likely held some of the unique blood type. At that moment, Henry is already bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon opening the case, which triggered the origin of his telekinetic giftsâabilities he would later pass on to the kids in Hawkins Lab.
Alternatively, the case could have held exotic matter that later made its way to the secret facility, where it maintains the stability of the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, returning after half a day as a different person. As a youth, he fights the whispers of a malevolent force, much like how Will Byers was influenced by the shadow monster in season 2.
Henry's enduring terror of that cave shows how utterly horrifying the event was for him. While he controls the collective consciousness and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. The villain weaponizes terror, and the series is building toward a climactic battle between Vecna and Will, who has confronted his greatest terrors to gain strength.
His confrontation has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now is aware of what Vecna himself fears, and this may grant a key upper hand in the ultimate battle to come.
