Out of every adult-oriented animated films I’ve personally viewed, no other has stuck with me quite like the fear-filled ending of a viscerally violent as well as highly provocative 2022 movie Unicorn Wars.
In 2015’s, this Spanish writer-director created a grim, somber , often savage world with some tiny , desolate twinges of optimism.
Although Unicorn Wars feels like it originated from an impulse to expand animation further, the filmmaker clarified that it was actually an effort to communicate a global, cross-cultural theme concerning “the shared root of all wars.”
This theme is communicated via a squad of colorful pastel bears , clearly modeled after a popular line of cuddly figures.
Maturing in a culture focused on militarism and the military-industrial complex, numerous the bears are obsessed with exterminating the mythical beasts, due to a holy book that claims the bears they were once kings of the woodland, until the horned beings forced them out.
Some have not completely bought into the propaganda, , prefer to try out substances and mate in the forest.
Unlike their gentle counterparts, these bright beings have visible genitals , clear sex drives.
For a certain especially vicious, cynical bear, the character Bluey, the conflict against unicorns transforms into a road to control — and specifically to supremacy above his more tender, kinder brother Tubby.
This bear acts as a tormentor , an obvious sociopath , and while fear overcomes his unit and claims his teammates individually, he grabs more and more control for himself, in increasingly bloody, destructive ways.
Meanwhile, the unicorns are suffering their own nightmare, through a growing, deadly beast in their forest.
“Initially, it feels like a comedy,” the filmmaker commented. “Yet it becomes a more serious and sorrowful film. And ultimately, it transforms into a horror film.”
Unicorn Wars commences resembling one of the most whimsical films by a renowned animator, that uncover a naughty glee in permitting drawn beings curse, shoot each other, or have intimate relations.
Subsequently it evolves into closer to a more grim film by that same creator, including ever more graphic violence and a palpable link to genuine horror of battle.
In the finale, it is a complete theatrical horror bloodbath.
The fear which makes this an ideal spooky-season watch begins much sooner than indicated.
Unicorn Wars is ideal for the devoted lovers of violence, for lovers of extreme cinema who wish to view a film they haven’t ever seen on-screen before, and are able to withstand a story that pulls no restraint.
View it in a dimly lit space with no disturbances, and the conclusion will dig into your mind and stay with you.
