The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Total Confidence' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch

Thiago Pitarch in action
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for the Spanish giants, featuring five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a 18-year-old makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a key European tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and attention.

During his first start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the club - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil last-16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to confirm a quarter-final berth.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch was the club's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vini Jr's record by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent Through The Academy

The midfielder is the most recent to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.

He signed for Real from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

He worked his way up to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they played against the academy's first team, then coached by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, personality and drive he brought to the side.

'His Best Attribute Remains His Character'

In the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited the youngster to train with the first team and awarded him playing time during the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the defining moment in his career as he came on as a late substitute in both ties against Benfica that set up the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing football, every day you head to training and every day you play a match," stated Pitarch following his debut.

"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."

Handed a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his place for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opening.

Pitarch has seized it with performances that have defied his age and inexperience.

"He is a very quick footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked the coach. "He's extremely dynamic, with great endurance, work-rate and mobility."

The player's mindset has also impressed his manager.

"His greatest quality is his character," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I realize people are surprised to watch him make his debut in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to do what he usually does.

"He will continue to get chances with the first team. It is delightful to have a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, moving through local academies before joining Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.

He holds dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, giving him the choice to represent both nations at senior international level.

According to international regulations, players may appear for different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a official full international.

He has played for the Spanish national team at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and under-20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to either full national side, who are watching his rise with keen attention.

Speaking recently, the player said: "I have not taken my final decision so far. My situation is great with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."

His situation echoes that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal chose La Roja, Brahim opted to represent the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which sealed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight tie with the German champions.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to help the club chase future success.

Following his notable contributions to date on the Champions League, Pitarch is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the same. We deal with it very normally. I try not to overanalyze it excessively - I must earn my minutes on the field," he said after the win at Etihad Stadium.
