Walmart Introduces Purchase Limits on Pokémon Trading Cards

In a significant move, Walmart has begun enforcing purchase restrictions on how many Pokémon trading card products customers can buy during one shopping trip. This new rule was activated starting November 5th, based on a company memo shared with employees.

Tackling Reseller Problems

While not officially confirmed by Walmart, numerous sources suggest this decision was prompted by a widely shared social media clip that depicted a customer buying an enormous quantity of Pokémon card items at a checkout counter. The store manager seen in the video received significant criticism for permitting the bulk transaction to go through.

Rule Specifics and Possible Weaknesses

The updated guideline states that shoppers may only buy up to five trading card boxes or packs each time they enter. Yet, the wording has sparked debate due to its lack of clarity. Precisely what qualifies as a "box" is not defined, and if someone could buy five premium Elite Trainer Boxes is uncertain.

Additionally, because the restriction is tied to individual trips, theoretically a determined scalper could make multiple trips—purchasing the maximum each time—to gather large quantities throughout the day.

The Scalping Phenomenon

To most players, such efforts might seem over the top, yet for resellers, it's common behavior. Over the past few seasons, speculators have significantly added to frequent stockouts of Pokémon cards, driven by the TCG's growing fame.

Certain buyers seek to resell sealed items for a profit, while others hunt for valuable pulls that can command extraordinary prices. For instance, the Mega Lucario ex card in recent releases is currently selling at prices exceeding eight hundred dollars in online marketplaces.

Looking Ahead

This policy change coincides with the approaching launch of the Phantasmal Flames set, coming on November 14th. Early listings already show chase cards like the Mega Charizard X Ex being offered for around fifteen hundred dollars, highlighting the persistent interest and potential reseller attention.

Hopefully, Walmart's restrictions will help reduce mass buying and improve availability for genuine collectors and everyday enthusiasts as well.
